The Endorsement Process
More DCLC members voted in this year’s endorsement than any other in the organization’s history. A total of 177 ballots were cast across two rounds of voting.
Endorsement required 51% or more of member votes. If no candidate in a race earned 51%, a second runoff election was held between the top two candidates in the first round to see whether either candidate earned 51%.
Candidates for elected office were invited to submit a DC Latino Caucus issues questionnaire by February 11, 2022. Completed questionnaires were made available for public review at https://www.dclatinocaucus.org/demprimary22questionnaires.
The Caucus then hosted their 2022 Democratic Primary Endorsement Meeting on Wednesday, March 23, on Zoom and streamed live on YouTube. The event offered candidates, campaign representatives, Caucus board members and members of the public the opportunity to advocate for endorsement. Over 100 people attended the virtual Endorsement Meeting including the majority of candidates across all races. Video of the proceedings is available at dclatinocaucus.org and on the organization’s YouTube channel.
Members of the public that joined or renewed their Caucus membership between January 1 – February 21, 2022, were eligible to vote for their preferred candidates using the ElectionBuddy online voting platform. Voting took place immediately after the Caucus’ Endorsement Meeting on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, through Sunday, March 27, 2022. Election results were certified on Sunday, March 27, 2022 by a committee of six board members including the Caucus President.
“The unprecedented turn out for our endorsement meeting is indicative of the importance of the Latino community in the District," says Jose “Joe” Barrios, president, DC Latino Caucus.
“Our membership is deeply invested in these races” continued Barrios, “More than fifty percent of the ballots sent to our members were submitted within two hours of our Endorsement Meeting.”
